Biography
Danny is a Melbourne based designer working predominantly in Theatre and Industry Lighting Design.
His Theatre works include; Griffin Theatre’s acclaimed 2011 production Speaking in Tongues, CUT (Belvoir), National Tours of Jack Charles vs the Crown (Ilbijerri Theatre) and I am My Own Wife (Tasmanian Theatre Company) West Side Story (VCA Music Theatre) and FOLEY – as lighting and co – video designer (Ilbijerri Theatre and Melbourne Festival). The Lost Story of the Magdalen Asylum (peepshow inc. at abbotsford convent) The Power of Yes (Company B); Red Sky Morning, Faces in the Crowd and Pool (No Water) (Red Stitch); Sisters of Gelam (Ilbijerri Theatre); Thom Pain (Based on Nothing) (Bsharp/Arts Radar); Care Instructions (Aphids/Malthouse Theatre); 3xSisters and Platonov (The Hayloft Project).
In addition, Danny has worked for companies such as Tasmania Theatre Company, Terrapin Puppet Theatre, Malthouse Theatre, Union House Theatre, Melbourne Workers Theatre, Full Tilt and La Mama, and holds a position with locally owned design studio Mance Design specialising in custom designed lamps and lighting for industry and domestic display. Danny is also a founding member and sit in the board of Melbourne based The Groundswell Division a company devoted to giving Australian artists the opportunity to create and produce their work and be shown in Melbourne with the support of a company infrastructure with a deep knowledge across all arts practices.
He runs his own freelance design practice, candlestick designs that encompasses Lighting Design for Theatre, Space and Architecture with a focus on how light interacts with the environment, the uses that it serves and the impact it has conceptually and practically on a specific space.
Credits away form Theatre include Production Designs for short film Blood Ballad (2007 Melbourne International Film Festival) and music video Crawling Around in the Cellar for Melbourne Indie Rockers The Bakelite Age, and he was a participating artist in the installation exhibition Inhouse for Platform Two at Melbourne Flinders Street Station.
Danny received a Melbourne Green Room Award for Outstanding Lighting Design in Independent Theatre for Platonov (The Hayloft Project, 2008) and has earned three Greenroom nominations for work as a lighting designer in 2008 and 2009 on productions of Red Sky Morning, Pool (No Water) and 3xSisters he has also been part of a number of projects garnering nominations for best production including The City (Red stitch, 2010) The Lost story of the Magdalem Asylem (Best site specific work nomination, Peepshow inc. 2010) among others . In 2008 Danny undertook a Besen Family Scholarship (Lighting Design)with the Malthouse Theatre observing on productions of Kitten and Woyzeck.
Danny graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006 with a Bachelor of Production and was the recipient of the 2006 Orloff Family Trust Scholarship Award. In 2005 Danny completed his Diploma of Small Companies and Community Theatre from Victoria University.
Danny is currently working on a production of This Uncharted Hour (Tas Performs, Theatre Royal) in Hobart whilst expanding on his work and experience as a video designer in theatre.
